Eight Electric Two-Wheelers Taken Off the Road in Belgium During Major Safety Inspection

A large-scale operation in Hasselt targeted e-scooters, e-bikes, and speed pedelecs, highlighting ongoing safety and speed concerns

On Wednesday, October 1, 2025, the Limburg Regio Hoofdstad Police District conducted a major inspection of new-generation electric vehicles in Hasselt, Belgium. The operation focused on e-scooters, fatbikes, and speed pedelecs, resulting in eight electric two-wheelers being removed from traffic. Police checked 28 vehicles and identified several violations, including three e-scooters that had been modified for extra speed, as well as e-bikes and motorcycles exceeding speed limits.

Throughout 2025, the Limburg Regio Hoofdstad region has seen around one hundred accidents involving electric two-wheelers, with 73 incidents involving e-bikes, 19 with e-scooters, and 8 with speed pedelecs. Fatbikes were not counted as a separate category in accident statistics. Authorities underlined that most accidents were linked to driver error and frequent breaches of speed restrictions.

During the inspection, officers found one e-scooter capable of reaching 64 kilometers per hour, well above the legal 25-kilometer limit, and a motorcycle almost doubling its speed threshold at 97 kilometers per hour. One e-bike was determined to be stolen, and its rider tested positive for drug use, prompting legal action and a plan to return the bike to its owner. Police noted that suitable equipment to reliably check the speeds of all models is still lacking, and called for official approval of the “rollentestbank” device to facilitate comprehensive speed testing in future operations.
