Brussels Tightens Residence Permit Rules for Non-EU Students

New regulations for renewing residence permits now apply to students from non-EU countries studying in Brussels, requiring online applications and stricter deadlines.

Brussels has implemented new regulations starting today for non-European Union (EU) students seeking to renew their residence permits. The updated rules apply to all students from non-EU countries—except for those from Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland—who plan to study in any of the capital’s 19 municipalities. The goal is to streamline the process and enhance compliance by introducing more specific application steps and deadlines.

From now on, all applications must be submitted exclusively through IRISbox, an online platform, selecting the ‘Non-European student’ option. Once the application is approved by the authorities, students will need to visit the Immigration Office in person, which only operates on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Officials emphasize the importance of adhering to institutional deadlines to avoid disruptions in residence status.

Application deadlines will differ based on the type of educational institution. Those enrolled in private schools with residence permits expiring on September 30 must apply before that date, while students at recognized institutions have until October 31. To obtain or renew a residence permit, students must possess a valid ID, be enrolled as full-time students at a recognized or publicly funded higher education institution, not pose any threat to public health, order, or safety, and have sufficient financial means. Additionally, students must pay the application fee or provide documents proving a fee exemption.
