European Commission to Launch New Electronic Entry-Exit System in October

The European Union's Electronic Entry-Exit System will begin on October 12, 2025, recording non-EU travelers at Schengen borders to boost security and efficiency.

The European Commission has announced that the new Electronic Entry-Exit System (EES), designed to monitor travelers entering and leaving the Schengen area, will be implemented starting October 12, 2025. According to the Commission, the rollout will take place gradually over six months, after which the system will be operational at all border crossing points. Officials emphasize that the EES will enhance border security and enable more efficient management of passenger traffic.

The new system, known as EES, will digitally record the entry and exit of non-EU nationals making short-term visits to the Schengen zone. In addition to passport information, the system will collect travelers’ fingerprints and facial images. Authorities state that this step aims to prevent irregular entries and reinforce security measures at Schengen borders.

Originally set to launch on November 10, 2024, the Electronic Entry-Exit System faced several delays due to infrastructure shortcomings. EU officials now highlight that, once fully operational, the EES will mark a new era in the European Union’s border management strategy.
