Israeli Military Intercepts Madleen Ship Carrying Gaza-Bound Activists

Volunteers aboard the Freedom Flotilla Coalition vessel faced communication blockades and reported distressing conditions as Israel redirected the ship

The Israeli military intercepted the Madleen, a vessel from the Freedom Flotilla Coalition aiming to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, abruptly cutting off all communications with the volunteers onboard. Turkish-descended activist Yasemin Acar managed to relay via video that Israeli soldiers commanded those recording events to immediately switch off their phones. United Nations Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese reported that her line to the ship’s captain was suddenly disconnected during the operation, highlighting the abrupt nature of the intervention.

Acar further described scenes of panic as Israeli personnel allegedly sprayed an unidentified white chemical substance inside the ship, causing severe eye irritation among passengers. Activists managed to record some footage before communications ended, exposing the confusion and distress felt under the sudden military presence and chemicals being deployed. The intervention has raised concerns from various humanitarian organizations about the tactics used during the boarding process.

In response, Israel’s Foreign Ministry announced that the Madleen would be diverted from its intended route and the activists deported to their respective countries. The United Nations responded by demanding the immediate release of both the vessel and those onboard, stressing that the mission’s primary goal was to provide humanitarian aid to Gaza. The incident has drawn international scrutiny and renewed calls for unimpeded humanitarian access to the region.
