Orange juice shows promise for cholesterol and high blood pressure

Recent scientific studies suggest that regular orange juice consumption may positively impact cholesterol levels and help lower high blood pressure, two major risk factors for heart disease and stroke

New research highlights the potential benefits of orange juice for heart health, specifically regarding cholesterol and high blood pressure. Studies published in notable medical journals have found that people who drink orange juice daily can experience meaningful reductions in total cholesterol, including among individuals with already elevated levels. In addition, an analysis of multiple studies suggests that orange juice may help decrease levels of LDL, or “bad,” cholesterol, although the effects on HDL, or “good,” cholesterol are still unclear.

Orange juice’s impact on blood pressure has also gained attention. Research from the “European Journal of Nutrition” in 2021 found that drinking orange juice over 12 weeks led to lower blood pressure readings, possibly due to the natural compound hesperidin present in oranges. Other studies have shown similar results, suggesting that especially orange juice enriched with hesperidin and flavonoids could enhance these benefits.

Despite these promising findings, experts caution that orange juice contains about 24 grams of sugar per serving. As a result, people with diabetes or those trying to manage their weight should monitor their intake carefully. While including orange juice as part of a balanced diet may help support cardiovascular health, it’s important to consider portion sizes and consult with a healthcare provider when making dietary changes.
