Europe urges Trump to ‘act like an ally’

Recent U.S. national security strategy sparks a wave of concern in European capitals as transatlantic tensions rise over accusations and policy differences

The newly unveiled U.S. National Security Strategy has caused unease across European Union capitals, where leaders have criticized the Biden administration’s stance on internal European affairs. Reaction intensified after the strategy document accused the EU of undermining political freedom and sovereignty, censoring free expression, and suppressing opposition, while also raising alarms about European migration policy and the continent’s future. Notably, the omission of Russia as a principal threat in the report drew praise from Moscow but sparked confusion and worries among European policymakers.

European Council President Antonio Costa voiced strong objections in Brussels, calling U.S. involvement in EU affairs ‘unacceptable’ and asserting that the United States cannot dictate policies or values to European nations. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul echoed these sentiments, defending Germany’s democratic principles and NATO commitments while rejecting many criticisms in the American strategy document. German government spokespeople also reaffirmed that political and free expression remain cornerstones of European values, maintaining Russia is still regarded as the primary threat to the region.

Political opposition in Germany joined the government in denouncing the U.S. approach, with members of both the CDU and SPD criticizing perceived American interference, and the Green Party labeling Washington’s tone as ‘blackmail.’ However, the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party welcomed Trump’s new security posture. Amid the ongoing debate, President Costa stressed the importance of treating each other as true allies, emphasizing the need for mutual respect and calling on Europe to assume more responsibility for its own security.
