Wildfire Danger Escalates in Portugal and Spain

Numerous wildfires in northern and central Portugal have triggered a high alert, while Spain braces for a scorching heatwave and challenging firefighting efforts

Portugal is on high alert as multiple wildfires sweep through its northern and central regions, prompting the National Civil Protection Agency to announce a record number of one hundred and thirty-two fire incidents this year. Over 2,700 firefighters and twenty-nine aircraft have been mobilized to contain the blazes and assist the many residents forced to evacuate their homes.

The most severe fires have been reported in the regions of Arouca, Penafiel, Ponte de Lima, Penamacor, and Ponte da Barca. While some fires have been brought under control, others have been reignited due to strong winds and soaring temperatures. Twenty people, including fourteen firefighters, have received medical treatment, and official figures show that more than twenty-two thousand hectares have been burned across Portugal since the start of the year.

In Spain, authorities warn that temperatures could reach up to 104 degrees Fahrenheit this week, intensifying wildfire risks. In Cuevas del Valle near Avila, firefighters are struggling to contain a forest fire fanned by high winds. Two hundred residents have been evacuated from the Caceres region, and a fire near Lleida charred about thirteen and a half hectares before finally being brought under control.
