Antwerp Police Announce Removal of 100th Vehicle From Roads This Week
Authorities enforce temporary bans on vehicles engaged in reckless driving to protect public safety in the city

Antwerp Police have reported that they removed their 100th vehicle from circulation this weekend as part of ongoing measures against antisocial driving that began in 2019. The initiative allows authorities to take vehicles off the road when drivers are found to be engaging in dangerous or inappropriate behavior, citing threats to the peace and safety of the city. The police, working in collaboration with prosecutors and city officials, can temporarily ban vehicles from public use on safety grounds.
Vehicles can be removed with the approval of the city, either upon an officer’s direct observation or evidence gathered from surveillance cameras. The policy has applied to various types of vehicles, including cars, motorcycles, e-scooters, and bicycles. Since its pilot phase in 2019, the program has become a regular part of the city’s law enforcement efforts and has affected many different drivers over time.
The milestone 100th case occurred on August 10, involving a shared vehicle speeding through a zone with a 30 km/h limit with its lights off. None of the three occupants wore seat belts, and the driver did not have a valid license. Local residents had reportedly filed multiple complaints about this vehicle in recent weeks. Authorities towed the vehicle to the police impound after the incident.
