Waiting times for construction permits in Belgium continue to rise

Flemish residents now face longer waits for environmental permits as regional differences widen and complicated regulations slow down new projects

Belgium is experiencing a steady increase in waiting times for environmental permits required for construction and renovation projects. On average, Flemish citizens must now wait about 97.8 days to receive approval from their municipalities, marking a notable rise of 14 days compared to 2019. Experts point to this continued growth in waiting periods as a growing concern for both individuals and the construction industry.

The province of Limburg stands out with the longest average waiting time, having reached 109 days, making it the only region in Flanders where the waiting period surpasses 100 days. In other Flemish provinces, average processing times remain below 100 days, but there are significant differences between municipalities. In some areas, the process can take as little as 42 days, while in others, it can exceed 140 days.

Officials from the Association of Flemish Cities and Municipalities emphasize that, despite recent increases, these waiting times are still considered relatively short compared to EU standards. However, they acknowledge that growing procedural complexity is a key reason for delays. The extended waiting periods are causing setbacks for new projects, impacting both developers and the broader construction sector.
