Majority in Germany Support Recognition of Palestine as a State
A recent ARD survey shows that over half of Germans favor official recognition for Palestine and want stronger EU measures on Israel

According to a new poll conducted by Germany’s public broadcaster ARD, a majority of Germans support the official recognition of Palestine as a state. The survey found that 55 percent of respondents are in favor of recognition, while only 20 percent oppose the idea. These results highlight shifting attitudes among the German public regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The same poll also asked about a potential suspension of the European Union’s trade and customs agreements with Israel, following recent events in Gaza. Of those surveyed, 55 percent expressed support for German government backing of such a move, compared with 27 percent who are against it. The data demonstrates increased willingness among Germans for the country and the EU to take tangible steps in response to the ongoing conflict.
Additionally, the survey revealed that 63 percent of Germans believe Israel’s military actions in Gaza have been excessive. Overall, the results suggest a significant portion of the German public would like to see more assertive international action on the Palestinian issue and greater criticism of Israel’s policies.
