Trump calls for end to clashes between Thailand and Cambodia

President Trump revealed diplomatic efforts to mediate peace as tensions escalate along the Southeast Asian border

President Donald Trump has announced on social media that he has engaged in diplomatic talks with leaders from both Cambodia and Thailand to urge a halt to the ongoing clashes between the two countries. Trump stated he spoke with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and plans to meet soon with Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai. He emphasized his demand for an end to the hostilities, noting that ongoing conflict hinders potential trade agreements, saying the United States does not wish to finalize deals with countries at war.

After concluding talks with Cambodia, Trump said he is awaiting Thailand’s response, and pledged to keep working toward a ceasefire and peace if needed. He referenced his involvement in resolving past conflicts, particularly between Pakistan and India, and expressed his willingness to play a similar role in helping Thailand and Cambodia achieve a peaceful settlement. Trump also underscored the necessity of resolving border tensions through peaceful means.

The conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, who share an 817-kilometer border, centers around longstanding territorial disputes. The latest skirmish occurred on May 28, and tensions reignited on July 24, resulting in 32 fatalities so far. Thousands of civilians have been evacuated from the conflict zone, with both sides accusing each other of firing the first shots along the border.
