Respiratory Infections on the Rise in Germany

Recent data highlights a significant increase in respiratory infections, including COVID-19 and influenza, leading to more hospitalizations and greater strain on the healthcare system

Germany is experiencing a noticeable surge in respiratory infections, especially over the past few weeks, as both coronavirus and influenza case numbers rise. As a result, hospitals are reporting a growing number of admissions related to these illnesses. Health experts have noted not only a significant spike in families reporting symptoms like coughs and runny noses, but also an uptick in workplace absenteeism due to illness.

According to the Federal Ministry of Health and the Robert Koch Institute, during the week of September 15-21, 2025, there were 969 doctor visits per 100,000 people for respiratory illnesses—a climb of 150 over the previous week. About 0.8 million people sought medical attention for acute bronchitis, flu, or throat infections in that week alone, marking more than a 14% increase in consultations over the last month. COVID-19 numbers are climbing as well: by September 27, the seven-day incidence rate reached 3.9 per 100,000 people, hospitalizations rose to 1.06 per 100,000, and the virus was increasingly detected in wastewater analyses.

While influenza incidence remains relatively stable, hovering at 0.18 per 100,000 with slight weekly fluctuations, there has been a slight decrease in flu virus load. RSV cases remain unchanged and at zero incidence recently. Hospital bed occupancy is a growing concern, with 79.8% of standard beds and over 83% of adult ICU beds filled. Experts stress the importance of good hygiene and vaccinating vulnerable groups, especially as the flu season kicks off and the health system prepares for heightened winter demand.
