The Netherlands Imposes Entry Ban and Additional Sanctions on Israeli Ministers

Dutch government calls in the Israeli ambassador and designates two Israeli ministers as persona non grata amid heightened tensions over Gaza

The Netherlands has announced a series of new measures targeting Israel in response to the latest developments in the Gaza Strip. Following talks with European leaders, including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the Dutch government summoned the Israeli ambassador and declared Israeli ministers Smotrich and Ben-Gvir as persona non grata, denying them entry to the country. Dutch Foreign Minister Veldkamp delivered a letter to parliament emphasizing the country’s ongoing pressure on Israel to comply with international humanitarian law.

Among the newly announced steps are strict restrictions on arms export licenses to Israel. The Netherlands will also provide additional humanitarian assistance, pledging 1.5 million euros to the United Nations and 3 million euros to the Red Cross to support overland aid deliveries to Gaza. Furthermore, the Dutch government is advocating within the European Union to suspend the commercial section of the EU-Israel partnership agreement.

After an emergency meeting at Catshuis, Prime Minister Schoof stated that the cabinet is working on both independently enacted and EU-coordinated sanctions against Israel. Israeli President Herzog responded by calling the Dutch position a “major mistake,” but stressed that humanitarian efforts for Gaza would continue. Upcoming discussions will review the future of cooperation between Israel and the EU.
