Germany Introduces Comprehensive Cell Phone Ban in Schools After Summer Break

Hesse state parliament approves a new regulation prohibiting non-educational cell phone use in school buildings and yards, with exceptions for emergencies and specific educational activities

Starting with the new academic year, schools in Germany’s Hesse state will implement a far-reaching ban on students’ personal cell phone use within school buildings and playgrounds. The decision, made by the state parliament, aims to prohibit private cell phone activity during school hours, though limited exceptions will be allowed for medical situations, emergencies, or when specifically permitted by teachers for educational purposes.

German education officials believe the ban will provide significant benefits for children’s development and mental health, citing concerns about distraction and social issues exacerbated by unrestricted device use. Education Minister Armin Schwarz emphasized the legislation’s role in highlighting the importance of digital literacy, noting that the changes are designed to strengthen responsible media use as part of the school curriculum.

While the new rules allow some flexibility for older high school students in certain areas, any unauthorized use may result in devices being confiscated until the end of the school day. The regulation will come into effect following the summer break and is part of a broader effort to balance technology integration with the well-being and skill development of students.
