European Union sharpens flood preparedness with improved early warning systems
Integration of advanced weather models boosts accuracy and response to rising flood risks across Europe
As climate change intensifies extreme weather events, communities across the European Union are facing an increased threat of floods. In response, the European Flood Awareness System (EFAS) has become a crucial resource, combining four distinct weather models to provide multiplatform forecasts tailored for the region’s varied landscapes. This sophisticated system aims to give both authorities and citizens more timely and accurate information to prepare for potential disasters.
Recently, EFAS adopted a new strategy that places greater emphasis on models with stronger predictive records. This approach results in a robust ensemble forecasting tool, leveraging the strengths of each model and integrating them to yield a more comprehensive flood probability assessment. Authorities benefit from clearer, more actionable data, making it easier to issue early warnings and implement protective measures.
From 2020 to 2023, an extensive evaluation confirmed that probabilistic models had the most significant influence on accurate flood prediction within the European Union. The integration and real-time updates provided through the Copernicus service delivered a notable improvement in alert accuracy—up to 10 percent. This advancement ensures communities are better equipped to respond promptly to flood threats, enhancing preparedness and potentially saving lives and property.
