European Commission President von der Leyen to Meet President Trump Sunday for Major Trade Summit

Meeting aims to resolve heightened trade tensions sparked by new U.S. tariffs on European imports

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has confirmed she will meet with United States President Donald Trump this Sunday in a high-stakes summit focused on recent trade disputes. The meeting was set following a phone conversation between the two leaders, and comes after the United States imposed an additional thirty percent tariff on European imports, escalating tensions between the two major economies.

President Trump indicated that the likelihood of reaching a trade deal with the European Union currently stands at only fifty-fifty, emphasizing the uncertainty that surrounds Sunday’s talks. With an August deadline looming, this summit is considered a crucial opportunity to prevent further escalation and potentially pave the way for a formal agreement or tariff reduction.

Ahead of the meeting, von der Leyen delivered an influential speech in China, which is widely seen as an attempt to sway Trump’s approach. European Union officials remain hopeful that the summit will produce a breakthrough, either by easing the steep tariffs or by establishing a clearer framework for future U.S.-EU trade relations.
