Belgium’s life expectancy surpasses 82 years in 2024
Statbel data reveals regional and gender gaps persist, with women and Flandre residents leading longevity averages

According to new data released by Belgium’s statistics agency Statbel, a person born in the country in 2024 can expect to live an average of roughly 82.4 years. This milestone highlights gradual improvements in overall health and living standards. The average, however, varies noticeably across regions and between genders, reflecting differences in lifestyle, healthcare access, and socioeconomic factors.
Women in Belgium continue to outlive men, with an average life expectancy of eighty-four years for women compared to nearly eighty years for men. Although women still hold the longevity advantage, the gap is narrowing steadily as men’s health indicators improve. Analysts suggest that changing lifestyle habits and public health interventions are contributing factors to this shift.
Among Belgian regions, Flandre claims the highest life expectancy, with figures that climb over eighty-four years, above the national average. Walloon areas report slightly lower averages, with some provinces just over eighty years, but Limbourg province stands out at eighty-three years. These findings underscore ongoing regional disparities but also point to encouraging national trends.
