Belgium launches a free initiative for pets of hospitalized owners
Cerfontaine Municipality introduces a system to ensure pets are cared for when owners are unexpectedly hospitalized, providing peace of mind and swift assistance in emergencies

Belgium’s Cerfontaine Municipality has started a unique, free program to protect the pets of residents who are suddenly hospitalized. Residents receive forms to record important information about their pets, as well as two emergency contacts who can step in if needed. All these details are securely stored in a dedicated system, making them immediately available to health workers or neighbors during emergencies.
As part of the initiative, people receive pocket-sized cards to carry in their wallets, alongside larger posters designed for home display, like on a refrigerator. These items make it easy for responders to identify pets in need when their owners are unable to provide care themselves. The system allows for rapid action, helping to avoid any delay in looking after animals and reducing the stress for both owners and emergency teams.
Officials emphasize that this approach both eases the worries of pet owners and lowers the risk of pets being forgotten or abandoned. The program’s structure has already caught attention outside Cerfontaine, with other Belgian municipalities expected to launch similar measures in the near future. Supporters hope the initiative will soon benefit pet owners and their companions across the country.
