Record Rainfall Hits Burgas, Bulgaria

City officials report unprecedented rainfall in Burgas, leading to widespread flooding and transportation disruptions

Burgas, a coastal city in Bulgaria, has experienced its highest recorded rainfall to date. According to Burgas Mayor Dimitar Nikolov, the city’s southern district received a staggering 249 liters of rain per square meter. This figure marks the greatest amount of precipitation measured since the local water level monitoring system was established.

While the official hydro-meteorological station in Burgas reported 110 liters per square meter, sensors at three different points stretching from the city center to the south registered the record-breaking levels. Mayor Nikolov emphasized that no infrastructure could quickly absorb such an intense downpour, acknowledging that the heavy rain has caused various negative impacts and damage, but he promised repairs would be made.

Previously, the highest amount of rainfall recorded in Burgas was 165 liters per square meter. Due to the intense rain, many streets and avenues across the city were left underwater, resulting in significant transportation delays and disruptions for residents.
