Israeli Forces Intercept Madleen Humanitarian Ship Bound for Gaza

Twelve international activists detained after attempting to deliver aid through the Gaza blockade, sparking international concern over their treatment

On June 1, the Madleen humanitarian ship departed Italy with the goal of breaching the Gaza blockade and delivering urgently needed aid. As the vessel neared Gaza, it was intercepted by Israeli military forces who subsequently detained the twelve international activists onboard. The activists were taken to Usdud Port, placed under surveillance, and handed over to Israel’s Immigration Authority for further processing.

According to Israeli officials, the detainees were warned to leave the country immediately or risk being sent to a detention center in Ramle. Those volunteers who agreed to depart were allowed to fly home via Ben Gurion Airport that same night. Meanwhile, the Adalah Legal Center filed for visitation rights to check on the detainees, and several human rights organizations expressed serious concerns over how the activists were being handled.

Local media reports indicate that activists who refuse to leave may be separated and held in individual cells at Givon Prison, raising the stakes of international scrutiny over the situation. The interception and aftermath have prompted an outcry from human rights groups, as calls continue for greater transparency and the fair treatment of humanitarian volunteers trying to assist Gaza.
