Meloni satisfied with EU summit’s Ukraine decisions
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed approval of the European Union leaders' summit outcomes, highlighting financial support for Ukraine and progress on trade talks with MERCOSUR

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni shared her positive assessment after the first day of the European Union leaders’ summit in Brussels, emphasizing the bloc’s determination to support Ukraine financially over the next two years. One of the key topics discussed was how to utilize frozen Russian assets to help fund Ukraine, a move Meloni described as wise and prudent, underscoring the need to continue working within existing EU regulations.
Meloni also addressed discussions around the planned free trade agreement between the EU and the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR), saying efforts are underway to delay the signing process. She noted that this delay grants Italy extra time to address farmers’ concerns and ensure adequate protections for Italian products, which she says are key national priorities.
The summit ended the day with broad agreement among EU members to fund Ukraine’s needs in 2026 and 2027 through joint borrowing of €90 billion, instead of depending solely on Russian frozen assets. Additionally, leaders agreed to postpone the finalization of the MERCOSUR deal, reflecting Meloni’s satisfaction that pragmatic solutions prevailed on both major issues.
