European Union announces new plan to tackle housing crisis
The EU Commission unveils a comprehensive initiative aiming to boost affordable housing, streamline building permits, and regulate short-term rentals across member states

The European Union has introduced a new plan to address the worsening housing crisis affecting millions across its member countries. According to the plan announced by the EU Commission, the focus will be on increasing the supply of homes more rapidly, easing permit processes for construction, and imposing limits on short-term rentals. The Commission highlighted that home prices have soared by over 60 percent and rents by more than 20 percent on average over the past decade, leaving many people struggling to find suitable and affordable accommodation.
The EU’s European Affordable Housing Plan emphasizes not only the social impact of the crisis, but also the risks it poses to economic competitiveness and social cohesion in Europe. By fostering greater accessibility to affordable, sustainable, and quality housing, the plan seeks to relieve pressure on families and individuals while promoting innovation in the building renovation sector. The Commission also underlined the importance of joint action among member states to overcome common challenges.
Under the proposed measures, countries will be able to more easily support social and affordable housing projects by simplifying complex rules and procedures that currently restrict supply. Additional regulations targeting short-term rentals will help alleviate shortages in high-demand areas. According to the EU Commission, the strategy is expected to balance supply and demand, encourage investments, and continue the EU’s significant financial support—amounting to 43 billion euros so far—for housing initiatives throughout Europe.
