Belgium Sees Surge in Older Employees and Flexible Jobs

Flexible job opportunities have rapidly expanded across Belgian industries, leading to a sharp increase in older workers participating in the labor force.

Belgium has experienced a major shift in its workforce, with more older employees taking up flexible jobs over the past year. Data from the National Social Security Institution shows a notable jump in flexible employment numbers, reflecting the growing appeal of these positions. Flexible job options are now available in a wider variety of sectors, including health, education, and transportation, moving beyond their traditional bases in hospitality and retail.

One of the key drivers behind this trend is the system’s ability to offer tax breaks and enhanced social security benefits, making flexible jobs particularly attractive to retirees and those looking for supplemental income. While most flexible workers remain in the twenty-five to thirty-nine age group, the fastest growth has been among people aged sixty-five and above. This segment of the labor force saw a staggering fifty-two percent increase—far surpassing gains recorded among younger workers.

The data further reveals that senior employees not only joined the flexible workforce in greater numbers, but also contributed more hours and earned higher incomes, particularly in transportation and funeral services. Meanwhile, younger adults continued to gravitate toward flexible jobs in hospitality for extra earnings. With flexible employment models gaining ground across multiple industries, Belgium’s workforce landscape is set for ongoing transformation.
