Belgium receives over 3 billion euros in third EU recovery payment

The latest 614 million euro installment from the European Commission brings Belgium’s COVID-19 recovery support to more than half of the funds allocated under the EU plan

Belgium has received its third recovery payment from the European Union, surpassing a total of 3 billion euros in financial support since the implementation of the EU’s post-pandemic recovery plan. The most recent payment consisted of 594 million euros in grants and 20 million euros in loans, bringing the country to about 58 percent of the approximately 5 billion euros allocated in grants and 244 million euros in loans overall.

The funds were released by the European Commission as part of the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), rewarding Belgium’s progress in meeting specific targets tied to the pandemic recovery. Projects qualifying for payment included accelerated permitting for renewable energy projects, improvements to rail infrastructure, the renovation of residential properties, and increases to childcare capacity. Additional achievements in digital transformation, education, skills development, and climate adaptation were also recognized.

The EU’s RRF is a massive 650 billion euro initiative aimed at making member states’ economies more resilient and supporting sustainable growth after COVID-19. As part of this broader effort, national governments are expected to pursue reforms and investments that align with the EU’s green and digital ambitions, unlocking successive funding installments as milestones are met.
