Belgium Condemns US Sanctions on ICC Judges

Belgium expresses deep concern after the US imposes new sanctions on two International Criminal Court judges and reiterates its call to uphold judicial independence.

Belgium has voiced strong opposition to the United States’ recent decision to impose sanctions on two judges from the International Criminal Court (ICC). Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Maxime Prevot conveyed his country’s deep regret over the move in a statement on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. He emphasized that these added measures undermine judicial independence and hamper efforts to fight impunity.

Prevot further highlighted Belgium’s continued support for the ICC, especially in challenging times such as these. He stated that they deeply appreciate the court’s resilience in the face of mounting obstacles and pledged Belgium’s ongoing backing for a free and impartial judiciary that serves justice for victims.

The US announced the sanctions in response to the ICC Appeals Chamber’s decision to dismiss objections regarding arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. Following this move, Belgium renewed its call for the protection of international justice and the impartiality of the judiciary.
