Amnesty International Condemns Israel’s Seizure of Madleen Aid Ship

The advocacy group demands the immediate release of detained crew members and calls on the global community to pressure Israel to end the Gaza blockade.

Amnesty International has delivered a strong rebuke following Israel’s interception of the Madleen, a ship carrying humanitarian aid, in international waters. The London-based organization criticized Israel for forcibly detaining the vessel and its crew, who were attempting to deliver essential food and medical supplies to civilians in Gaza. Officials from Amnesty emphasized the symbolism of the Madleen’s mission, saying it highlights worldwide solidarity with Palestinians facing severe hunger amid the ongoing blockade.

General Secretary Agnes Callamard stated that Israel’s detention of aid volunteers represents a grave violation of international law. Amnesty International called for the immediate and unconditional release of all crew members and demanded their protection from any harm or abuse while in custody. The organization also pointed out that the operation occurred in international waters, bringing attention to what they described as breaches of binding International Court of Justice decisions.

Amnesty’s statement urged world governments to halt their support for Israel’s blockade of Gaza and to take concrete measures that ensure humanitarian assistance can reach those most in need. The group stressed that humanitarian initiatives should never be criminalized and warned of the dangerous precedent set by intercepting aid missions at sea. They concluded with an appeal for international accountability and stronger efforts to uphold human rights in the region.
