Turkish Coffee recognized as a ‘traditional product name’
The European Union registers Turkish coffee, making it Turkey’s first protected traditional product name in the EU

Turkish coffee has officially been registered as a ‘traditional product name’ by the European Union, following an announcement published in the EU’s Official Journal. The registration process, initiated by the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB), concluded after three months and marks a significant achievement for Turkish culinary heritage. This recognition means Turkish coffee is now Turkey’s first protected traditional product name under the EU’s safeguard.
In a statement, TOBB highlighted that Turkish coffee also holds a place on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List, underscoring its importance beyond just being a drink. With a history spanning more than 500 years, Turkish coffee is considered a symbol of hospitality, conversation, and friendship in Turkish culture. TOBB emphasized its ongoing commitment to preserving traditional values and promoting them worldwide, noting that Turkish coffee’s unique aroma and flavor will now be officially appreciated throughout Europe.
The announcement also noted that Hatay kaytaz böreği and Gaziantep lahmacunu have received geographical indication registration from the EU. TOBB President Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu stated on social media that 40 different Turkish products now enjoy EU geographical indication protection, with 42 more geographical indications and two additional traditional product names still undergoing the application process. Other well-known Turkish products with protected status in the EU include Gaziantep baklava, Aydın figs, Malatya apricots, Edremit and Milas olive oils, Taşköprü garlic, Ezine cheese, and Safranbolu saffron.
