EU Commission President von der Leyen calls for sanctions on Israel
Ursula von der Leyen urges partial suspension of trade with Israel over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, stressing the urgent need for international action

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called for sanctions against Israel and a partial suspension of trade with the country in response to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Addressing the European Parliament, von der Leyen highlighted the severe humanitarian crisis facing civilians, especially children and families, and stated that the suffering has deeply shocked the world’s conscience.
Von der Leyen also announced that the European Union will establish a Palestine donors group next month focused on reconstructing Gaza. Emphasizing that man-made famine can never be used as a weapon of war, she insisted that the suffering of civilians in Gaza must end immediately. Her remarks added to a growing chorus within the EU calling for a tougher stance on Israel due to the worsening situation on the ground.
Amid rising humanitarian concerns following Israeli military evacuation orders in Gaza City, aid organizations have reported a sharp increase in the number of people fleeing the area. Von der Leyen’s intervention comes at a time when criticism and demands for sanctions within the EU have intensified. She reiterated the necessity for the European Union to play a more active role in addressing the crisis, describing the ongoing deprivation as an unacceptable tragedy for civilians.
