Parks Closed Across Belgium Due to Storm Amy as Yellow Alert Issued Nationwide

The Royal Meteorological Institute has warned of winds reaching up to 90 kilometers per hour, prompting city officials to take precautionary measures and close public parks.

Belgium is bracing for the impact of Storm Amy, as the Royal Meteorological Institute issues a yellow alert for high winds across the country from 8 a.m. on October 4 through the morning of October 5. According to forecasts provided by the UK’s meteorological service, winds could reach speeds of up to 90 kilometers per hour, especially in regions expecting rain by the end of the day. The coastal areas may see the alert level elevated to orange as conditions intensify.

In response, city authorities in Brussels, Liège, Huy, and Namur have implemented a range of safety measures. All regional parks in Brussels, as well as the Soignes forest, have been closed for 24 hours, with information boards placed at entrances and staff directing visitors. In Liège, the traditional October Fair, originally set to open at 3 p.m. on Saturday, has been postponed to Sunday. Huy is restricting access to wooded areas, parks such as Vierset and Bastin, and some major roads, while public bus routes are being altered. Namur is also closing city parks to the public from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday.

Belgium’s Federal Interior Service has activated the 1722 emergency number as of Friday afternoon for non-life-threatening situations such as storm damage or minor flooding. Residents can use this number to request assistance from fire services for issues like roof damage, flooded basements, or water-covered roads. Alternatively, requests can be made through the website www.1722.be.
