Macron suggests talks with Putin could return to agenda in Ukraine peace process

French President Emmanuel Macron highlighted the potential need to resume dialogue with Vladimir Putin and stressed the importance of security guarantees for Ukraine at the EU Leaders Summit in Paris

At the European Union Leaders Summit in Paris, French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized the importance of exploring diplomatic options to end the Russia-Ukraine war. Addressing journalists, Macron stated that discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin could once again become a necessary part of efforts to achieve lasting and just peace in Ukraine. He underscored the need for a comprehensive peace process, which he believes should ideally bring all parties together at the negotiating table.

During the summit, Macron also highlighted the critical role of security guarantees for Ukraine and noted that ongoing contact with Putin remains crucial. He pointed out that while some leaders have maintained communication with the Russian president, it is beneficial for both Europeans and Ukrainians to restart talks within an appropriate framework. Macron warned that without such an inclusive approach, Europe could face negotiators engaging with Russia on a one-sided basis, which he deemed less favorable for achieving a balanced outcome.

Macron reiterated France’s commitment to pursuing a robust peace process anchored in security guarantees and transparency. He called on European officials to seek avenues for transparent dialogue with Russia in close coordination with Ukraine, emphasizing that all partners must work together to foster meaningful and durable solutions. His remarks come as European leaders grapple with the ongoing conflict and seek ways to support Ukraine while pursuing a stable and cooperative European security architecture.
