Fake captain pilot flew passenger planes across Europe for a year

A man employed by Lithuania-based airline Avion Express operated as a captain without the required license, raising concerns over aviation safety standards.

Authorities have revealed that a man identified as L. A. B. worked as a captain pilot for nearly a year at Avion Express, a Lithuania-based airline, without possessing the necessary pilot license. The Aero Telegraph news portal reports that L. A. B. only held credentials for a co-pilot position but allegedly faked documents during the application process to secure the higher-ranking job. His flights involved multiple passenger journeys across Europe, and the case impacts several airlines that use Avion Express for short-term aircraft and crew leasing.

Avion Express’s fleet mostly consists of Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft, and its subsidiary, Avion Express Malta, has also provided services to the German carrier Eurowings during peak travel seasons. Following the incident, company management launched an internal investigation and insisted their recruitment procedures adhere to industry standards. However, the revelation has drawn attention to potential weak points in the vetting and oversight methods used by airlines.

The scandal has sparked serious concerns about passenger safety and the effectiveness of aviation sector regulatory controls. Ongoing investigations are focusing on how travelers may have been put at risk and whether falsified qualifications might be an issue at other airlines as well. The aviation community is now closely watching the outcomes, as both regulators and airlines reassess their processes to prevent similar breaches in the future.
