European Union to Provide 545 Million Euros for Renewable Energy in Africa

EU funding aims to expand solar, wind, hydroelectric, and geothermal energy projects across Africa, addressing electricity access and green job creation

The European Union has announced support exceeding 545 million euros to boost renewable energy production in Africa. According to a statement from the European Commission, this funding will be directed toward investments in solar, wind, hydroelectric, and geothermal energy. The initiative aims to enhance clean energy access on a continent where nearly 600 million people still live without electricity.

European Commission officials highlighted Africa’s vast potential in the renewable energy sector and emphasized that these investments are critical not only for development but also for strengthening global supply chains. The announcement points out that increasing energy access is both a developmental necessity and a strategic priority for international cooperation.

Experts estimate that these investments could create up to 38 million green jobs in Africa by 2030. The funding package was unveiled by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at the ‘Global Citizen’ festival in New York. Key projects include the development of wind and hydroelectric initiatives in Lesotho and the construction of a high-voltage transmission line in Côte d’Ivoire, signaling a focus on regional energy infrastructure.
