Belgium Raises Alert to Orange Code as Severe Heat Wave Approaches

Authorities urge public caution as record-breaking African heat front triggers emergency warnings across Belgium

Belgium has officially raised its national alert to Orange Code in response to an intense heat wave sweeping into the country from Africa. The Belgian Meteorological Institute has issued urgent warnings, underlining that the entire nation is expected to experience potentially dangerous levels of heat through late June. Monday’s forecasts predict temperatures will climb up to thirty-two degrees Celsius, signaling the start of what could become one of the most intense heat waves in recent memory.

According to meteorologists, Tuesday’s temperatures are set to shatter previous records, with values expected to soar above thirty-five degrees in Belgium’s western and central regions. The heat is forecasted to intensify on Wednesday, with central and eastern areas likely to experience highs between thirty-six and thirty-seven degrees Celsius. While some western coastal regions may benefit intermittently from cooling northern winds, most of the country will remain under threat of extreme heat and fluctuating local conditions.

In response, officials are strongly encouraging residents—especially vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and those with preexisting health conditions—to take extra precautions. Recommendations include staying hydrated, limiting outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and monitoring official updates as the situation evolves. The government has reiterated the importance of heeding warnings and taking action to minimize health risks during this period of unprecedented summer temperatures.
