Child Poverty in Belgium Draws Attention According to UNICEF Data

UNICEF's latest report highlights Belgium as one of Europe's leading countries facing child poverty, especially in its capital Brussels.

A recent UNICEF report has revealed that Belgium is facing significant challenges regarding child poverty, ranking among the top European countries on this issue. The situation is particularly alarming in the capital, Brussels, where 23.3% of children are at risk of poverty or social exclusion. The figures vary significantly across the country’s regions, pointing to deep-rooted disparities.

In the Wallonia region, 16.2% of children live below the poverty line, while this number drops to 7.3% in the Flemish Region. Experts emphasize that socioeconomic inequalities have a strong negative impact on children’s lives, affecting their health, education, and overall development. They underline the urgent need for lasting solutions to break the cycle of poverty among young people.

Officials stress the importance of strengthening both national and local policies to tackle child poverty more effectively. The UNICEF report also highlights that the issue is not just an economic problem but a societal emergency that requires immediate attention and collective action.
