Number of Belgian Police Officers Seeking Second Jobs Rises Sharply

Increase in police requests for additional employment raises concerns about salaries and public safety in Belgium

The number of Belgian police officers applying for permission to work second jobs has seen a significant rise in recent years. According to Interior Minister Bernard Quintin, applications jumped from 321 in 2020 to 639 in 2024, sparking conversations about the adequacy of police salaries despite the critical role officers play in public safety. Many attribute this growing trend to financial pressures and dissatisfaction with current compensation levels.

Parliament member Matti Vandemaele emphasized that the spike in requests could put public safety at risk. He noted the essential role police officers have in society and called the wage issue a clear warning to the ministry. Vandemaele also highlighted that in the past, staff shortages had led to certain police operations ending prematurely, further underscoring the strain on law enforcement resources.

The rise in officers holding second jobs can cause organizational challenges and disrupt regular police operations. Without effective solutions to this trend, authorities warn that there could be a loss of manpower among police as well as an increased impact on overall public safety.
