Flanders Surpasses Employment Goals by Moving 13,500 from Welfare to Work

Municipalities across Flanders have outperformed job placement targets, with additional government funding and new benefit restrictions shaping the region’s employment landscape

Local authorities in Flanders have achieved remarkable success by moving more than 13,500 people from welfare into jobs in less than a year—a figure that greatly exceeds the initial targets set by the Flemish government. Among the province’s success stories, Antwerp led the way with over 5,000 new job placements, while East and West Flanders also reported significant numbers. Notably, several municipalities managed to double their employment goals, although some areas continued to face persistent labor market challenges and fell short of expectations.

To build on this progress, the Flemish government has distributed an extra 8.5 million euros in aid to roughly 200 municipalities, aiming to further boost job opportunities and support ongoing workforce initiatives. This injection of funding is expected to help municipalities address local employment obstacles and create pathways for more residents to secure stable work.

Looking ahead, Belgium faces a major shift as upcoming national restrictions on unemployment benefits are anticipated to drive hundreds of thousands more individuals toward social assistance programs. Government officials have responded by promising additional support measures for those affected, pledging to stabilize the transition from unemployment benefits to workforce participation and maintain momentum in Flanders’ efforts to fight joblessness.
